Waste and recycling collections are essential services for households and must be considered when designing a new development or even converting an existing property. Failure to do so can lead to poor services for future residents and could result in objections to planning applications.
Somerset Waste Partnership has guidance (see downloads below) to help you ‘plan in’ suitable storage areas to enable ease of use, appropriate access and sufficient space to accommodate the containers specifically used in Somerset’s collections. Good planning can greatly improve the functionality of the home and its aesthetics, making it a more desirable property.
The Code for Sustainable Homes also promotes better planning for waste separation within the home. Having an in-house area for separating recyclables makes it easier and more convenient for busy residents to sort items as they arise. Recyclables turn up in every room, so for greater convenience it helps to have space for recycling on each floor. This helps recycling be an everyday routine, rather than a chore.
