Asbestos collection
Asbestos can be harmful and should be treated carefully. Do not place asbestos into your wheeled bin nor put out for kerbside refuse collections. Some recycling sites are able to accept asbestos or collections from your home can be arranged for sheet bonded asbestos.
If you can safely transport the asbestos (having approriately wrapped or bagged it), there are dedicated containers at Bridgwater, Frome, Highbridge, Minehead, Street, Taunton and Yeovil recycling sites. Also see page on asbestos disposal for safety guidance on handling and preparing asbestos prior to taking for disposal.
Asbestos collections
To arrange a collection of domestic sheet bonded asbestos from your home contact customer services at Somerset County Council. There is a charge to use this service of £80 plus vat per load, with some concessions available.
A load (up to 1 tonne) approximately equates to 16 sheets of 6ft x 2ft (2.5m x 0.6m) or up to four storage heaters.
Contractor Viridor will collect your asbestos within 10 working days from a request and you will be invoiced for the appropriate amount after collection. Please ensure the asbestos is easily accessible outside your property and where possible please wrap or double bag the sheets. Do not break up the asbestos and leave sheets whole.
We are unable to arrange collection of commercial or trade asbestos. If you have commercial asbestos or a large amount for disposal, contact the Asbestos Removal Contractors Association or arrange with a commercial waste management company (a list of registered carriers can be obtained from the Environment Agency).
