Many people worry about simply throwing away old batteries from their torch, remote control or children’s toys. Now there is an easy way to recycle them. From 1st February 2010 most shops selling household batteries will be providing a drop off point to collect dead ones for recycling.
Under the new EU Batteries Directive any retailer that sells more than 32kg of household batteries per year, or around 320 packs of AA batteries, will provide a collection or “take-back” point. That will include supermarkets and many larger shops and newsagents.
