Somerset recycling fit to face the credit crunch
Following decreasing international demand for manufacturing materials, the global market and prices for recycled raw materials have suffered dramatic declines in recent months. However, thanks to years of careful planning, Somerset is in a better position than most to weather these difficulties.
Unlike some local authorities who mix their recycling collections, Somerset Waste Partnership operates a system of sorting recycling at the kerbside. That means that there are very few “contaminants” or impurities mixed in when the materials are reprocessed, making them much more attractive to manufacturers. The result is all of Somerset’s recycled materials find markets, with over 90% recycled in the UK.
On top of that, thanks to careful negotiation, some recycled materials have a guaranteed minimum price specified in long term contracts with reprocessors.
Nigel Woollcombe –Adams, Chair of the Somerset Waste Board explained why Somerset is still in a position to make progress: “While global markets in general have contracted, there will always be room for quality. In Somerset the systems we use and the arrangements we have made with contractors take away much of the worry. There will be some impact on overall income until markets recover, but we are in a far stronger position than many others. The reprocessing companies we speak to tell us we’ve got it right for their customers and, because local councils in Somerset work together on waste, we’ve ensured a better deal for local people. The message to everyone in the county is carry on recycling – it’s right for your environment and it’s right financially.”
Further cause for long term optimism was added by the national Waste and Resources Action Programme (WRAP). In a statement they have pointed out that current low prices are likely to be temporary and that even in the current climate, not all commodities are affected. The price paid for glass, for example, continues to remain stable. WRAP added that recycled materials are a valuable resource, helping protect our environment.
