Free training launches Compost Champions scheme.
The Somerset Waste Action Programme (SWAP) is offering free training to local people who are keen to know more about and champion the benefits of home composting. They are offering a one-day training course to volunteers who will then be asked to share knowledge with others in their local community.
The Somerset Waste Action Programme is an education team based at Carymoor Environmental Centre and funded by Somerset Waste Partnership. They are a familiar sight in local schools, colleges and community groups and they now want to build up a network of volunteer Composting Champions.
“Almost a third of the waste produced from Somerset’s households could be home composted, transforming food and garden waste into a great fertiliser. Schemes like the Compost Champion initiative have been very popular in other areas and really make a difference in cutting down waste while benefiting local communities at the same time,” explained SWAP Team Leader Rupert Farthing.
The training days will be: • Carymoor Environmental Centre, near Castle Cary Friday - 20th February, 10am - 4.30pm • Hestercombe Gardens, Cheddon Fitzpaine, Taunton - Thursday 26th February, 10am - 4pm
Topics will include, building or buying a compost bin, getting the mixture right, solving composting problems and how to pass on your knowledge to others
Compost Champion training is free and volunteers must live within Somerset. All that is asked in return is that they champion home composting within their local community and, if possible, attend events such as fairs and fetes to spread the word. SWAP will pay reasonable travel expenses, provide display materials and be available to give advice if needed.
