Misuse leads to removal of recycling banks
Misuse of recycling banks at Sainsbury’s in Street has led to store managers asking Somerset Waste Partnership to remove the facilities from their property.
The site has been subjected to a series of instances of littering and fly tipping. This has resulted in Somerset Waste Partnership agreeing to remove the banks at Sainsbury’s on March 20th.
“It’s a shame that the few individuals who misuse these sites can have such an impact on the many who use them responsibly. I sympathise with staff at Sainsbury’s who feel they have to put their customers first. At the end of the day there is no excuse for fly tipping or littering anywhere,” said Councillor Nigel Woollcombe-Adams, Mendip District Council Environmental Portfolio Holder and chair of the Somerset Waste Board.
Somerset Waste Partnership continue to provide extensive recycling facilities in Street, including recycling banks at Southside car park and the nearby Household Waste Recycling Centre on the A39 (Farm Road).
“Local people can recycle many materials with their kerbside collections and there are good alternative facilities nearby, so I do hope people will continue recycling uninterrupted,” Cllr Woollcombe-Adams added.
