“Do you really need me?” – SWP pack aims to cut down on carriers
In many towns and villages across the UK people are taking steps to reduce carrier bags in an attempt to reduce rubbish and save resources. In Somerset alone it is estimated that 1,000 tonnes of carrier bags are buried in land-fill sites annually, which costs local tax payers £60,000 per year.
Following enquiries by local people asking for advice, Somerset Waste Partnership has produced a handy free guide. The pack provides hints and tips for residents who wish to join forces with their local retailers to reduce the number of bags given out with suggestions that can be adapted to suit the local situation.
The pack includes posters, badges and “till talkers” all promoting the theme of “Do you really need me?” which was developed following a successful pilot campaign in Wellington in 2007.
