SWAP strengthens successful Compost Champion scheme

The Somerset Waste Action Programme (SWAP) is offering free training to local people who are keen to join the successful Compost Champion scheme. The one-day training course is for volunteers who will then be asked pass on their skills to promote the benefits of home composting.

In February 2009 SWAP launched a Somerset Compost Champion scheme and now works with 30 keen volunteers who pass on their enthusiasm for home composting within their local community.

“Compost Champions are becoming a familiar sight at small local community events such as village fetes and ‘green days’. The Champions are able to share their composting knowledge and pass on practical hints and tips on all matters composting” explains Rupert Farthing, SWAP Team Leader.

“Almost a third of the waste produced from Somerset’s households could be home composted, transforming food and garden waste into a great fertiliser. Local Compost Champions can really spread the word as they are real people who are able to make home composting part of their everyday life and show that it is simple to do and results are easy to achieve”.

Compost Champion training is free and volunteers must live within Somerset. All that is asked in return is that they champion home composting within their local community. SWAP will pay reasonable travel expenses, provide display materials and be available to give advice if needed.
The training day will be held at Carymoor Environmental Centre, near Castle Cary on Tuesday 25th August, 10am to 4.30pm and will cover building or buying a compost bin, getting the mixture right, solving composting problems and passing on your knowledge to others.
