Problem recycling banks make way for improved kerbside service

With plans being developed to roll out of Sort It Plus kerbside collection of plastic bottles and cardboard in Taunton Deane, Somerset Waste Partnership will be removing a number of recycling banks.

Recycling banks only contribute a small percentage of materials recycled in the county and can attract fly tipping and litter. To reduce costs and support implementation of the more effective kerbside collections a number are earmarked to go.

Councillor Tim Slattery, Taunton Deane Environment Portfolio Holder and Somerset Waste Board member explained: “These recycling banks are expensive to maintain and don’t always do the job required in Somerset. We need to make sure we keep what funds we have for the improved kerbside collections without creating unreasonable barriers to recycling. So we’ve carefully identified banks that are under used, attract fly tipping or provide services that are duplicated nearby. Before they go we have written to land owners, to whom we’re very grateful for having the banks on their land, offering to let them take them on. If they don’t, rather than stand still, we’ll take them out to get ready for better kerbside collection services.”

The full range of materials can still be recycled at Household Waste Recycling Centres and at recycling banks in larger towns and villages.

Sort It Plus will roll out across Taunton Deane over two years. Participating Households will receive an additional recycling box and a notification pack before plastic bottles and cardboard collections start (please do not put these materials out for collection before receiving your start date for the service).
