Make a food waste pledge and win prizes

Somerset Waste Partnership has teamed up with local authorities throughout the South West to create a month long campaign designed to help us all think differently about food, and win some outstanding prizes.

The new campaign, which will launch on 12th October is a first for the South West. 35 Local Authorities across the region are pooling expertise and resources to get the Love Food Hate Waste message out to residents.

Families in the South West throw out on average up to £50 worth of good food every month. That’s around £600 a year which could be put to better use or food that could have been eaten. With some clever shopping and creative cooking it’s easy to reduce the amount of food ending up in the bin and save money too.

By visiting the website, lovefoodhatewaste.com/southwest and making a pledge to reduce their food waste, Somerset residents could win some very special mouth-watering prizes and find out about local events.

The prizes include a gourmet weekend for four in St Ives or Ilfracombe, with food from two of the region’s top chefs, dinner for two in Dorset’s Restaurant of the Year 2009 or a bespoke cookery lesson for two at a Cookery School in Bristol.

Somerset Waste Partnership will be holding roadshows across the county to promote the SW Love Food Hate Waste campaign. Why not come along to play the ‘wheel of food’ game, discuss top tips for reducing food waste and even pick up a promotional gift - don’t forget to make a pledge too!

The launch event will be held at Angel Place Shopping Centre in Bridgwater on 12th October and to mark the occasion SWP are offering one lucky person a bumper prize to help them waste less food and save money. Other promotional items and prizes will be on offer at roadshows listed below.

The South West Waste Recycling Forum (SWWRF)

SWWRF facilitates the exchange of information on Municipal Waste Reduction, Reuse, Recycling and Composting by developing links between Forum Members through regular Forum Meetings, seminars, visits and email information exchanges. SWWRF also contributes to Policy Development at Local, Regional, National and European level.

35 SWWRF member authorities are working alongside the Waste & Resources Action Programme (WRAP) and the Love Food Hate Waste Campaign. The partnership is running a month long campaign to promote waste reduction and encourage everyone to think more about how they can reduce food waste through simple changes in behaviour.

Improving efficiency is an important target for all the Local Authorities. Reducing biodegradable food waste across the region and sharing responsibility for getting the message out throughout the South West means that both carbon emissions and costs are will be reduced.

Campaign Funding

The Waste and Resources Action Programme (WRAP), the South West Regional Improvement and Efficiency Partnership (SW RIEP) and the Environment Agency, have supported the South West Love Food Hate Waste campaign financially and further money has been provided by a number of local authorities across the South West region.

Key facts from the Love Food Hate Waste campaign:

• We throw away 6.7 tonnes of food each year in the UK, when most of this food could have been eaten. (It’s not just peelings and bones – it’s good food.) That’s equivalent to filling Wembley Stadium with food waste 8 times over!
• In terms of environmental impact – producing, storing and getting the food to our homes uses a lot of energy. If we stopped wasting all this food, it would save the equivalent of at least 18 million tonnes of carbon dioxide. That’s like taking 1 in 5 cars off UK roads.
• Most of this food reaches landfill sites where it emits methane, a powerful greenhouse gas.
• At least £10 billion worth of food that could have been eaten is thrown out every year. UK householders are throwing out on average more than £400/year. This increases to £600/ year for families with children.
• We throw food out for two main reasons: 1) we cook or prepare too much, costing us around £4 billion per year; 2) we let food go off, either completely untouched, or opened/started but not finished, costing £6 billion per year.
• Since the Love Food Hate Waste campaign launched, nearly 2 million homes are feeling the benefits of cutting back on the food they waste, on average by 40% - saving them £164 so far each year.
• National figures show 7 million slices of bread are binned every day, along with 1 million slices of ham, 4.4 million whole apples, 1.3 million yoghurts and yoghurt drinks and 440,000 ready-made meals, with fresh fruit and vegetables topping the list.
