CCTV and automatic number plate recognition

Closed circuit television cameras (CCTV) and Automatic Number Plate Recognition system (ANPR) operate at all recycling sites within Somerset.

CCTV number plate recognitionThese are used to:

  • personal safety on site
  • to deter break-ins
  • to monitor traffic congestion
  • to help determine waste levels entering the site
  • to provide site usage data
  • to deter illegal deposit of commercial waste
  • to monitor observance of the vehicle and trailer permit system.

How does this affect me?

The data recorded by the CCTV and ANPR systems will be held in accordance with the Data Protection Act 1998.

The CCTV system records 24 hours a day.  Data will be held securely and will be accessed only by key Viridor and Somerset Waste Partnership management staff.  Vehicle registration plate data will be stored and periodically deleted, with only those records related to potentially illegal commercial waste deposits or site misuse issues being kept as evidence.

The data will be used to identify potential illegal commercial waste users of the site and take action against them. This in turn will reduce commercial waste entering the sites and so lower the burden on council tax payers in meeting the costs of subsequent haulage and disposal for this waste.

Please note that, as a precautionary measure, if you are bringing materials in a commercial van or trailer you may be asked about the source of the waste and to sign a household waste declaration form.
