Asbestos waste collections

Due to the governments advice on social distancing, we have taken the difficult decision to suspend Asbestos and Plasterboard disposal requests until further notice. This will allow us to redeploy staff to essential services only.

We are sorry for the inconvenience this will cause and we hope that you will understand that these are difficult and unprecedented times. We will reintroduce this service as soon as it is possible to do so.

Asbestos can be harmful and should be treated carefully. Do not place asbestos into your wheeled bin or put out for kerbside refuse collections.

There is a charge to use this service. If you want to have asbestos collected, you will have to pay online in advance.

From 1 April 2020, the price is £208.00 + vat (£249.60 per collection) per load, with a maximum collection of one tonne, plus a treatment fee of £13.40 per sheet or equivalent sack of asbestos or asbestos containing material (ACM).

A load (up to 1 tonne) is approximately 30 sheets of 6ft x 3ft (1.83m x 0.91m) or up to eight storage heaters. (See our storage heater advice on our asbestos disposal at recycling centres page).

Our contractor, Viridor will collect your asbestos within 10 working days of payment being received. Please ensure the asbestos is easily accessible outside your property, having been appropriately wrapped or double bagged (preferably in clear plastic). Do not break up the asbestos and leave sheets whole.

We can’t arrange collection of commercial or trade asbestos. If you have commercial asbestos or a large amount for disposal, contact the Asbestos Removal Contractors Association or arrange collections with a commercial waste management company (there is a list of registered carriers on the GOV.UK website).

Some recycling sites are able to accept asbestos.

If you can safely transport the asbestos (having paid and appropriately wrapped or bagged it), there are dedicated containers at Bridgwater (Saltlands), Frome, Highbridge, Minehead, Street, Taunton (Priorswood) and Yeovil recycling sites. Also see our page about asbestos disposal for safety guidance on handling and preparing asbestos before taking it for disposal.
