South Somerset: Recycle More info on its way

South Somerset: Recycle More info on its way

Tuesday 11 May – An introduction to a new era in recycling will soon be landing on doormats across South Somerset.

‘Get ready for Recycle More’ leaflets will be delivered from the start of next week, outlining the expanded Somerset Waste Partnership (SWP) recycling service which starts at the end of June.

A second leaflet delivered three weeks before launch will give further detail, including a ‘What goes where?’ recycling guide and an individual collection day calendar.

More than 1,500 new or replacement recycling boxes and food waste bins have been requested in South Somerset in the last three weeks as canny householders get ready for the change.

Recycle More adds extra items to weekly recycling collections, including plastic pots, tubs and trays. It is already working well in Mendip where it was launched in October last year.

Households will have a new recycling container – a ‘Bright Blue Bag’ – delivered before the new service starts. Lots more recycling means much less rubbish, so rubbish bins or sacks will be collected every three weeks instead of two.

Making full use of weekly collections is key for Recycle More and now is a great time for everyone to make sure they have the containers they need.

They are free and can be ordered quickly and easily, 24/7 from the website using the My Waste Service menu or by calling your local district council.

Recycle More means doing things a little differently – keeping new items for recycling and sorting them into different containers. For around a third of households it will also mean a change in collection days.

SWP is here to help with guidance and support. Anyone with questions or concerns can find more information online

Mickey Green, SWP Managing Director, said: “We’re very happy with the way Recycle More is going in Mendip and really excited to be bring it to South Somerset.

“Most people are recycling and this new service makes it easier for everyone to recycle even more, helping protect our environment and tackle climate change.

“Look out for the leaflets and get in touch if you have any questions or worries.”

Recycle More will see the following added to weekly recycling collections.

  • Plastic pots, tubs and trays
  • Food and drink cartons
  • Small batteries
  • Small electrical items

Those living in properties with communal or shared collections will also see expanded collections, though what is possible will depend on the space and access at each site.
