Check your dates! Taunton Deane ready to Recycle More

Monday 25 October – “Consult your calendar” is the message from Somerset Waste Partnership (SWP) as Taunton Deane gears up for the launch of Recycle More next week.

The new service starts across the area – including Taunton, Wellington and Wiveliscombe – from Monday (1 November) adding extra materials to weekly collections.

With more being recycled, rubbish will be collected every three weeks instead of every two.

Residents can use the calendar in their “Recycle More is coming soon” leaflet (see image of sample calendar) to check their first new collection day and collection days for the next 12 months.

Collection days will be changing for about half of households so please check.

The calendar will also show if you are due an extra rubbish collection this Saturday (30 October) or next Saturday (6 November). These will make sure no-one has to wait more than three weeks between rubbish collections as we move to the new service.

Collection day information is available online using the “My Collection Day” feature on the somersetwaste.gov.uk website. Calendars can also be downloaded for printing or directly into your laptops or mobile device’s calendar.

A replacement leaflet can be requested using the online form on the Somerset West and Taunton website www.somersetwestandtaunton.gov.uk (see Recycle More in the popular tasks) or by calling 0300 3048000.

Distribution of a new recycling container – the Bright Blue Bag – for all households started last week. Do not worry if you have not received yours yet, the deliveries will continue right up until Friday 29 October.

Recycle More is already running in Mendip and South Somerset and in both districts it is seeing more than 100 extra tonnes of recycling collected each week.

The service adds the following items to the weekly collections:

  • Plastic pots, tubs and trays
  • Food and drink cartons
  • Small batteries
  • Small electrical items

Residents will need to put things into different containers. Please check your leaflet and Bright Blue Bag tag for your simple, colour-coded explanation of what goes where.

The Bright Blue Bags should be used for:

  • Plastic bottles, pots, tubs and trays (rinsed and squashed/nested)
  • Tins and cans (rinsed and, if safe, crushed)
  • Aerosols (empty)
  • Foil (rinsed)

Green box – glass bottles and jars, and cartons, including Tetra Pak

Black box – paper and card

Brown food waste bin – all food waste

Household electricals go in an untied carrier bag on top of recycling – bags will be returned. Small batteries go into tied bread bags, freezer or similar see-through bags.
